Presenter tips

  • Submit description of demo at least 2 weeks in advance for 4DMethod post and email blast
  • We currently use Zoom.us to host the meetings.  The Zoom links will prompt you to download the Zoom client application for your platform.  This can be done in advance of the meeting.
  • Prepare a few slides for an introduction to the concepts you’ll be presenting
  • Share any slides/ demo database online so 4DMethod can link to them
  • Fewer slides/ less text/ more talkie.  See general presenter tips online
  • Raise the font in code/ slides so text is legible in the video
  • Can be 20-90 minutes in length depending on content and feedback
  • Use earbuds to have best audio quality/ less echo
  • Connect to the meeting 30-45 minutes early on the day of the meeting to double check AV and screen sharing
  • Do not close the meeting window during the presentation or the meeting will go like this
  • Ask periodically if people are there to make sure the stream is still up
  • Give some personal/ professional history in the demo
  • Let me know in advance if there is something you would like me to include in your introduction
  • Share a personal picture for the questions slide
  • Screen share the entire monitor instead of just application windows
  • Turn off notifications on your machine so pop ups don’t interfere with presentation
  • Please do not screen share yourself scrolling through documentation
  • Keep your pace fairly slow so people can process what you are presenting.  Most people tend to talk too fast.
  • Don’t jump around code, switch windows, scroll up and down too fast because it can be very disorienting to viewers
  • Feel free to use a discussion style instead of lecture style for the demo.  I am always happy to chat about the content and ask a question or two along the way.
  • Try recording yourself doing the screen shared presentation and critique yourself for practice.  You are generally your best critic!
